Wood ear mushrooms are soft gelatinous looking black fungi that grow, as many mushrooms do, on wood. They are named 'wood ear', which is apt because they look like little ears growing out of fallen logs. It makes me wonder, if a tree falls in the forest... Hehe.
Bad joke. I do think it's pretty beautiful to think about these fallen trees hearing the forest around them as they turn back into soil, nourish the forest floor, and prepare the earth to grow new trees and other plant life that will take their place.
