Note
Hummingbirds are tetrachromats whose UV cone allows them to perceive non-spectral colors, combinations such as UV+red and UV+green, that have no analog in human experience. Bromeliad inflorescences evolved bright tubular reds specifically to advertise to this visual system. This painting renders the bromeliad in a palette of pinks, magentas, teals, and yellows, gesturing at hues the medium cannot reproduce. The central yellow-and-violet form sits where the bird's eye would meet the flower (not represented). The colors chosen are an artistic compression of vibrancy, standing in for a speculative perceptual experience of UV color.
